Neo-Geo
These non-representational, hard-edged, geometric paintings explore aspects of color interaction through layered textures and patterns. They are quite labor-intensive -- involving creating different areas of textures and patterns by altering the processes by which the colors are applied. Portions of these areas are then preserved through masking, sometimes delineated as distinct geometric shapes. The final steps often involve overlaying smaller patterns of contrasting colored geometric shapes as well as bordering certain areas with lines of color.
The results of a painting are surprising when the masked layers are removed. Very often, the resultant pattern and color combinations do not work and require a complete re-do. It is for this very reason that I am so intrigued by these investigations. I usually begin with a certain color combination I want to explore and, sometimes, an idea of the pattern. Each step of the process inspires the next. Still, I can never know what the outcome will be as there are so many variables involved.
